This device cuts power to your gadgets once they are fully charged.

The SavaSocket Mobile Saver is really inexpensive. We found the price pretty reasonable so we bought 3 at once for our device in the office.

In our office we have laptops, mobile phones and even an electric toothbrush. These devices all consume some electricity when charging. What we didn’t know is that once these devices are fully charged they still consume electricity. Huh, you probably are thinking while scratching your head. Yes it is true.

It is easy to charge a device and forget about it and waste energy.

To remedy this problem we bought some SavaSocket devices. They are great and do exactly as it says from the website we bought it from.

Definitely recommend it!

All in one kit that has various gadgets and devices to save water and in turn save you money. The Water and Energy Saving Kit comes in a little box. Included in the box are 9 gadgets/devices that meant to save you water. In the box you will find a water showerhead, a kitchen tap aerator, two bathroom aerators, a shower timer, a cistern water saver, a folder water bottle, a room thermometer, a fun water saving game and wrist band.

The only items we found useful and had the biggest impact in saving water were the aerators for the bathroom and kitchen, showerhead and cistern water saver. These items were pretty high quality and uncomplicated to fit. Measure over a week we did some reduction in our water consumption. So it does work!

I found the other items in the box a bit useless and a bit gimmicky. In my opinion could have been left out as they serve very little purpose in saving water. I would have preferred an extra aerator instead of these little ‘nik nak’ items.

Would I pay that price and buy the kit? Expensive but the majority of the device and gadgets are of good quality and are great water saving devices. Maybe if bought separately it could be cheaper. However I would like to suggest to the manufacture to leave out the silly game in favour for more useful gadgets.

The Ecozone Eco Laundry Balls and Dryer Cubes Set saves money, save water, save energy and make your washing of clothes more eco friendly.

I tested the Eco Laundry Balls on different loads washing everything at the recommended energy saving temperature of 30 degrees. Firstly I tried of set of my beautifully expensive white cotton sheets and then a load of mixed colours t-shirts and undies. I also tried to stress test the laundry balls against some muddy grass stained trousers. I couldn’t fault the white or colour wash loads. The load of muddy grass stained trousers came out cleaner but not without some remaining dirt marks. We also did not put the washing on any rinse cycle, as this is apparently not needed when using Laundry Balls –This reduced our washing time and saved water.

In conclusion, all the loads came out lovely, soft and relatively clean; but couldn’t add the word ‘fresh’ to this sentence, as the laundry balls are fragrant free. This does not mean you couldn’t add some eco friendly conditioner. The manufacturing claim is that the balls take away smells and don’t add any. I couldn’t tell either way. Against tougher stained or dirtier clothes the Laundry Balls didn’t perform too well. I would recommend using the balls with a tougher eco friendly powder. Over all not a bad alternative to your normal washing powders. It does save time and save energy! The pellets in the Ecoballs are also refillable and are a cheaper alternative to your normal box of washing powder.

This product has also been voted Ten Best Green Household Products by The Independent- so I guess it isn’t too bad!

After a brew I moved onto our next test. I separated the washing into what looked like two equal piles. The manufacturing claim is that it dries clothes quicker saving you money on energy bills. It also apparently makes your clothes softer.
I added the Dryer Cubes to the first load that went into the tumble dryer. My timing test was based on watching an episode of Planet Earth. Each episode is about an hour long. I periodically checked the washing. 47 minutes into the episode the washing was dry. Not bad! I did a second test repeating synchronising my Planet Earth viewing with the timing the drying time of the washing; this time without Dryer Cubes. The result was….(drum roll please!?) not all items in the tumble dryer were dry after an hour.

In conclusion, adding the Dryer Cubes definitely sped up the drying process. However the Dryer Cubes didn’t really make the first load feel any softer than the second load (as claimed by the manufacture). They equally felt pretty soft.

An energy cost saving gadget that stops draughts from coming through the letterbox.

The Ecoflap fits on the back of the letterbox and replaces the normal old-fashioned brush or gravity flap. The whole point of installing the EcoFlap is to prevent cold air/draughts from entering the hallway. This in turn keeps the house and office warmer for longer and saves money on energy bills.

The Ecoflap comes in 2 standard colours, white and a dark brown colour. We ordered a white one to match our front office door. The Ecoflap is made from what seems like good quality plastic. I am not sure if it is made from recycle plastic but that would be bonus if it was. The Ecoflap also light as a feather.

Installation and setup took a matter of minutes; within 6 mins it was attached to our door. We tested the Ecoflap with different sizes of mail. No shoes boxes could get through; the biggest mail we got through the flap was your standard Yellow Pages. Another good thing about this Ecoflap is that it doesn’t ‘bite back’ (no springs or hinges to grab your fingers) and therefore wouldn’t damage your mail. It is also noise free and no wind will blow it open unless you encounter a tornado.

In summary a really good buy!

An energy cost saving gadget that helps warms your room much quicker.

The Radiator Booster is an energy saving device that sits on top of your radiator. Effectively is has a little built fan that circulates and distributes warm air across. This device also is meant to draw up the lost heat from the space between the wall and radiator. By helping circulate warm air around the room the room should warm up quicker and thus you don’t need to keep the heating on for long. This is where the energy saving and cost savings comes in.

How long would it take to get results?

The package claims –running costs are 30p a year – enables you to reduce your thermostat – pays for itself in 8 weeks – circulates the lost warm air between the radiator and wall.

I sat in the office unpackaged the gadget. The packaging wasn’t anything fancy. There wasn’t any unnecessary plastic packaging wrapping etc. At first glance it isn’t the most attractive little device. I guess the manufacturer could have come up with more colours. I spotted a potential issue; the Radiator Booster needs to be close to a plug socket.

The cord that comes with device is only 1.8m. The setup is pretty much child’s play, just plug it in and waits for the little fan to do its work. The office did feel like it warmed up quicker than normal. Please bear in mind that our offices aren’t that big yet. I am not sure how this will perform in a bigger room.

The Good, the bad, the Ugly (Summary)

The GGFH team were pretty toasty and the general feeling is it did what is said it would do!

‘Save You Money’, yes you heard right; by going green or adopting an eco friendly lifestyle can save you more money than you think. In the current doom and gloom about the global economy everyone man and his dog is trying to save pennies and keep the pennies for the so called ‘rainy days’ to come. This is all negative talk; my positive spin on this is that we can adopt a green way of living, benefit mother earth and save money. Saving money and adopting a lifestyle that will benefit future generations are two very powerful things we can do immediately without much effort.

Applying any of the 3 going green principles ‘reduce, reuse and recycle’ in our daily lives will lead to savings. People have a misconception that going green will cost a lot of money. Ok, I must admit some of the green technology will cost an initial investment fee but in the long run you will see some pennies back in your pocket. In this blog post we will look at some simple acts that can save money for you and your families.

8 Simple Eco Friendly Tips That Can Save You Money

1) Grow your own veg – saving £30 -£45 per month

Growing your own fresh produce can save significant amounts on the monthly food bill. Not only will it save you money it will also benefit your health. The vegetables will be grown organically with love and care free from any harmful chemical agents. Believe me, things will taste better if you know they are good for you and its saving you money.

2) Adjust Water Heater Temperature Settings – saving £3-£6 per month

Adjusting your water temperature by 2-4 degrees lower can save you money. Your boiler will take less energy to heat the water and thus save you some money. Also washing your clothes in the coldest temperature possible will also save you some extra cash each month.

3) Switch your light bulbs to approved energy saving ones– saving £6-£8 per month

Lighting in the home accounts for about 7% of the cost of energy bills. Changing to Compact Fluorescent light bulbs will save you money each month. These bulbs require less energy to run and last 5x longer than normal light bulbs.

4) Harvest rain water and get a water butt – saving £5-£10 per month

Water bills keeping increasing every year making more dents in our precious savings. We need to reuse and recycle water. One-way of efficiently doing this is to invest in a water butt. This smart but simple device will allow you to harvest rainwater. This can then be used to water the garden, wash the car or fill the pool.

5) Invest in a flask – saving £2-£3 per month

Boiling water for coffee, tea and other drinks consumes energy. Think! Every time you want a hot drink has a small cost associated with it, as this requires some energy to boil the kettle. Invest in a flask that can hold a couple of litres of hot water. This will required less re-boiling of the kettle and will save you money.

5) Zonal Heating – saving £8-£12 per month

Only heat areas of the home where you will spend most of your time. Unnecessary heating of passages or bathrooms will add to your energy bills.

6) Make your own cleaning products – saving £5-£10 per month

Surprisingly cleaning products are a big part of our monthly bills. I started experimenting by making my own non-toxic products using basic things like vinegar, baking soda and lemon juice. So far my concoction have been pretty good and has saved me some extra dosh to spend on myself.

7) Inflate your tyres – saving £2-£5 per month

Check the tyre pressure. Lower tyre pressure means your rotation of the tyre is longer i.e. more rubber hits the road. This means your car in essence is travelling ‘further’ and burning more fuel. Lower your fuel costs but checking the tyre is correctly inflated.

8) Purchase intelligent power strips – saving £8 -£12 per month

All your appliances and gadgets are continuously consuming power. Even if they are standby they are slowly eating away at your savings. Solution is to unplug appliances if they are not being used or invest in an intelligent power strip that will cut the power to certain appliances or gadgets if they are not being used or fully charged.

*The illustrative saving values in the blog are relative and subject to usage in your homes.

In this blog we will be giving you some Eco pest control tips that will help you get rid of or deter pests from you home without putting your health at risk.

We share our homes and gardens with these small and irritating intruders. They occupy our cupboards, beds, bedrooms, kitchens and gardens eating scraps and destroying our plants and vegetable patches. Our solution to this everyday problem is to buy an over-the-counter pesticide. These pesticides often contain chemicals, which are toxic to humans, animals and our precious environment. These chemicals often remain in the air and surfaces for days.

Eco pest control will help you repel these pesky creatures in a very green way. Go green for getting rid of pests naturally.

Eco Pest Control Tips:

Flies

Flies carry potential harmful diseases and germs that make us sick. They fly around carrying germs from your surfaces to foods.

Use eucalyptus oil wrapped in an absorbent cloth and left in areas where flies are a problem.

Make your own flypaper using syrup and sugar. Use strips of kitchen brown paper, coat the paper in syrup and sugar overnight and then hang up the strip with string or pins.

Citronella oil infused with mint leaves and left on window sill or doors will deter annoying flies coming into your home

Ants

These small creatures get everywhere in your food cupboard, on your food feeding on scraps etc.

Mint is another great deterrent. Place mint leaves in areas where ants are most active.

Cucumber peels – ants don’t like cucumber peels for some reason. Use cucumber peels to repel these nasty creatures.

Coffee beans left near the entrance of ant nests will also deter ants from leaving their nests.

Fleas

Get rid of those biting critters that make you itch and scratch.

Almond oil and Orange oil– put some almond oil or orange oil in a spray bottle. This can be either applied directly to your own skin or on your pet. It can also be used as a preventative measure if applied lightly on carpets, bed linen and sofas.

Make your own flea trap – place water in a shallow pan, place the fan on the floor, shine a light on the pan. The fleas will be attracted to the warmth of the light ad will hopefully jump in the pan and drown.

Cedar shampoo – wash your pets with natural cedar shampoo.

Mosquitos

Another pesky creature that will makes you itch and scratch.

Use Neem oil from the Neem tree in India. The Neem oil contains sallanin, an element that has been very effective in repelling mosquitos.

Another Eco pest control tip is to plant marigolds in the garden. Mosquitos and other bugs don’t like the smell that marigolds give off

Thai lemon grass – trying to grow your own thai lemon grass. This grass has natural citronella. Break a few stalks off, crush in a bowel and apply to your skin. Having these plants in and around the house and garden will also repel mosquitos.

Cockroaches

These very resilient creatures are everywhere nowadays. They are very hard to get rid of and can be found in most homes.

Cockroaches do not like garlic, coffee beans and cucumber slices. Place these items in areas where you trying to repel these nasty creatures.

Catnip is a great natural repellent. Catnip left in areas where there is cockroaches activity will stop them coming back. It can also be used in a spray by mixing water with the catnip and then spraying areas in the house where infestation has occurred.

Boric acid is another great way to get rid of roaches. Place some Boric acid on top of cupboards where Cockroaches like to live.

Slug and snails

These slimy creatures destroy our beautiful flowers and vegetable gardens.

Slugs and snails love beer. Put some beer in jar and place it in the middle of the your plants. The slugs love the smell, the will crawl and be too intoxicated to climb out and will eventually drown and die.

Use Eco friendly pellets. These aren’t harmful to humans or animals.

Lastly an Eco pest control tip is to have certain plants in the garden, which deter slugs and snails. Daffodils and Astrantia are examples of plants that slugs and snails dislike. Strategically placed around the garden this will repel those slimy creatures from destroying our beloved garden.

Try these Eco pest control tips and get rid of these unwanted critters while keeping our homes, environment and the ‘good’ creatures safe from toxic pesticides. GoGreenForHomes!

Going green in the office should be simple and easy. Whatever solutions we put in place it should firstly try to reduce the impact on the greater environment and secondly it should be simple and cost effective. Going green in the office should be on the agenda of every company. Every person in the office should feel empowered and encouraged to make a difference to create an eco friendly office that reduces its impact on the environment. Being green should be part of the corporate culture in every office. Personally I would like to see more incentives from business leaders and even the government to encourage companies to be more environmentally responsible.

Fact: YouGov Survey “Only 51% of employees say their companies have formal green policies”. This figure is pretty low and I would like to see this percentage rise.

In this blog post we explore simple and easy to implement ideas that will have an immediate impact to your company’s (must have) mission to Go Green.

8 Useful Tips For Going Green In The Office:

1) Remove the plastic cups from the water fountain – Removing these plastic cups will encourage people in the office to reuse their own cups and reduce the plastic wastage your company produces.

2) Use recycling bins – Encourage your manager to buy specialised recycling bins. Have bins for: Plastics, Glass, Cardboard & Paper, Packaging and Organic waste. Having seperate bins will help recycling companies to sort the waste into specific reusable commodities.

3) Did you kill a tree today? Print wisely – Consider emailing first. Print only the information you need. Use the printing options on your printer to print double sided or print in ‘economy mode’ to use less ink. Some computers even have fonts that use less ink. Recycle you ink cartridges. A few suppliers have a ‘buy-back’ scheme where you get a discount if you return the used cartridge to them. Also make sure you buy chlorine-free recycled paper only.

4) Let there be intelligent lighting! – Going green in the office by using energy saving lighting like LED’s or compact fluorescent bulbs. These lighting solutions use 25% less energy than regular light bulbs and lasts 10x longer. This will save the company in energy bills and put more money in the bonus pot . Your company can reduce its energy consumption and save even more money by installing motion sensors. This will turn off the lights when you are not in the room.

5) Turn off the computers and the peripherals - It is ok to put the computer in sleep mode if you are downloading some legal stuff or installing something. Give you computer a break if it is not in use and shut it down. Your company can even consider replacing computers with laptops. Laptops use up to 70% electricity. Also turn off all peripherals like monitors and printers. This will save your company money on energy bills while helping our environment.

6) Incentivise carpooling, using public transport or cycling – Encourage your workers to carpool, use public transport or cycling. Have schemes or policies that incentivises ideas that reduce the carbon footprint.

7) Go Green in the toilet – Fit water saving devices like dual flushes toilets when you did a Number 1 and don’t need a lot of water. The Hippo device place in cisterns is also a great way to save water consumption in your company

8) Non-toxic cleaning – Use cleaning products that are plant based and non-toxic. Chlorine based bleaches or cleaning products are very unhealthy and dangerous for your colleagues and the environment. “ Healthy workers are happy workers!” Ecover are great eco-friendly cleaning products.

Going green in the office can also be taken very literally by encouraging more plants in the office. These plants will create a calming atmosphere in those sometimes very stressful office environments. The added greenery will also produce oxygen; oxygen that will keep your colleagues awake and working at their peak potential!

Following on from our previous blog post Environment Friendly Tips To Keep Cool This Summer we now going to look at some great natural foods to keep you cool this summer.

These natural summer foods will cool you from the inside out. They will not only cool your body but it will also keep you in shape and give you more energy on those lazy summer days. More energy to go to more festivals, roll in the grass, play Frisbee, swim, take long walks, mow the lawn and maybe spend more time playing fetch with Fido.

Let’s eat, be merry and celebrate the summer fun!

The Best Natural Foods To Keep You Cool This Summer:

Coriander (aka Cilantro) – Coriander also known as Cilantro is a green herb with a very distinct smell. This herb is used in many dishes from all parts of the exotic world, India, Thailand, Middle East and Vietnam. This herb is normally sprinkled on top of foods as a garnishing. This herb has been proven to be an excellent way to cool the body’s core temperature. It has many added benefits as well (to name a few) – aids digestion, anti inflammatory, reduces nausea, wards off infections, high in iron and magnesium, anti-septic for skin disorders. Add Coriander to your salads or foods for that nice healthly cooling effect.

Cucumber – I am sure you heard the term ‘cool as a cucumber’. There is a good reason for this saying. This vegetable is packed with summer goodness. They have a high water content so its one way to stay hydrated in summer. They can also be used as natural cooling agent to alleviate the pain and swelling from sunburn (when applied to the skin ). The added benefit is, it has zero calories so it will keep you slim and looking good in summer. Cucumbers are packed with energizing vitamins and minerals (Vitamins A, C, K, B6 folate and thiamin; Minerals calcium, iron, manganese, selenium, zinc and potassium).

Watermelon – This is an awesome summer fruit to keep you cool. My personal favorite. This is a great thirst quencher, high in water, low in calories and packed with natural sugars. Watermelon is also high in Vitamin C and Vitamin A , boosting your immune system in summer and great for the skin. Pink watermelon is also a source of the potent Carotenoid antioxidant, Lycopene. Lycopene has been known to prevent prostate cancer in men. Eating a freshly cut wedge of watermelon from the fridge while sitting at your pool is the best way to enjoy this summer fruit. Yummy!

Coconut – Coconut made into a drink called ’coconut water’ is great natural food to keep you cool this summer. Coconut water has become the latest craze used my sports people to stay hydrated. The electrolytes from drinking coconut helps keeps the water and minerals levels balanced in our bodies. A little known fact is , Coconut also contains Lauric Acid which can be found in human breast milk. Lauric Acid a type of fat that is easily absorbed and turned into energy instantly. It also helps fight infections just like breast milk consumed by babies. Cool hey?! But one of the best uses of coconut water is prevention and treatment of hangovers, especially if you over indulging in alcohol on those scorching summer days.

Peaches – Peaches originated in China have been used for many decades in medicines. One of the great properties of Peaches is its ability to cool the body’s core temperature. Known as the ‘cooling fruit’ in China, peaches are high in fiber and vitamins. It is also one of the only fruits that contain calcium. Peaches are also rich in iron, which is very good for people suffering with anemia. In summer they are best eaten whole or drunk as a refreshing ice-cold tea.

Chilies – Contrary to what you are thinking right now, chilies has a cooling effect to the body. A chili increases circulation and makes you sweat and this process of sweating is nature’s way to cool you off. Chilies also contain capsaicin that releases endorphins to the brain and makes you feel good. Happy Days! Add chilies to your salads or summer foods. This one of my favorite natural foods to keep cool this summer.

Aloe Vera – Aloe Vera is best known for its soothing and cooling effects. As your digestive system builds up with toxins this causes an inflammation of your organs, which in turn produces ‘heat’. Aloe Vera helps clear out your digestive tract releasing toxins and cooling the body from the inside out. The Aloe Vera gel is also great for treating 1st degree burns (Sunburn). Aloe Vera has anti-inflammatory, anti-bacterial and anti-fungal agents that reliefs and cools sunburn and speeds up the skin’s recovery. The Aloe Vera drink can be purchased from your nearest health store. It is best drunk chilled sitting under an umbrella with your fee up sitting in you bikini or boardshorts.
